New Netherland – the Dutch in America

As the English colonies developed in Virginia and New England, the Dutch established a vast trading empire in an area that spanned from Delaware to Connecticut.  New Netherland, located between the English holdings, was a unique colony with people of diverse backgrounds.

As a group, you will select a region of New Netherland on which you will focus.  Your group will summarize basic information on New Netherland and provide detailed description of a specific part of the colony.  All the information you need is located on the websites listed below.  You will need to use the internet to locate images, maps, and anything else you think might be necessary for the presentation.

Your group will create the following artifacts:

  • PowerPoint presentation on a specific region of New Netherland
  • Timeline of major events pertaining to a specific region of New Netherland
  • 2 page handout -- 1 page includes basic info on New Netherland (Step 1) and 1 page has info on your region of the colony from your PowerPoint (Step 2)
